Night prayer: short prayers before bed

The last few minutes before sleep are often spent replaying the day or scrolling a screen. A short night prayer gives them back to God, so you can lay the day down and rest.

Why pray at night?

Morning prayer points the day toward God. Night prayer hands it back. Whatever happened (the good conversation, the mistake, the worry you could not fix), you bring it to God before you sleep instead of carrying it into the dark on your own.

The Bible treats evening prayer as something ordinary and good. The psalmist describes his prayer rising like incense at the end of the day:

“Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.”

Psalm 141:2 (KJV)

Night prayer is also an act of trust. Sleep is the one part of the day when you control nothing. Praying before you close your eyes is a way of saying that God keeps watch when you cannot.

“Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”

Psalm 121:4 (KJV)

Short night prayers to pray before bed

Use these as they are, or let them become your own words. Each one takes under a minute.

A night prayer for peace

Lord, thank You for carrying me through this day. I give You what went well and what did not. Quiet my mind, calm my heart and let me lie down in Your peace. Watch over me and the people I love tonight. Amen.

“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”

Psalm 4:8 (KJV)

A prayer before bed when you are worried

Father, my thoughts keep circling back to what I cannot fix. I hand it to You now: the conversation, the bill, the test result, the person I am afraid for. You are awake when I am not. Help me let go for tonight and trust You with tomorrow. Amen.

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)

A prayer for rest and good sleep

Lord, my body is tired and my mind is still busy. Give me the rest You give to those You love. Let my sleep be sweet and let me wake up ready to serve You. Amen.

“When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.”

Proverbs 3:24 (KJV)

An evening prayer of forgiveness

God of mercy, I did not love well today in every moment. Forgive my sharp words and the good I left undone. Help me forgive the people who hurt me, so I do not take resentment to bed with me. Thank You that Your mercy is new every morning. Amen.

“Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:”

Ephesians 4:26 (KJV)

A bedtime prayer for your family

Lord, I bring You the people under this roof and the people I love who are far away. Protect them tonight. Give rest to anyone who is sick, lonely or afraid. Hold my family in Your hands while we sleep. Amen.

A one-line prayer for when you are too tired for words

Into Your hands, Lord, I give this day, my worries and my sleep. Amen.

That last prayer borrows from Psalm 31:5, a verse Jesus prayed on the cross. Christians have used it as a night prayer for centuries:

“Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.”

Psalm 31:5 (KJV)

A simple five-minute evening prayer routine

If you want more than one sentence, this short pattern works well before bed. It mirrors the morning prayer routine, so the two can frame your day.

  1. Put the phone down firstPlug it in across the room or set it face down. It is hard to hand the day to God while a screen keeps adding to it.
  2. Give thanksName three things from today you are grateful for, however small: a meal, a message, a moment of quiet.
  3. Look back honestlyAsk where you saw God today and where you fell short. Confess what needs confessing and receive His forgiveness.
  4. Let go of tomorrowName what worries you about tomorrow, one thing at a time, and leave each one with God.
  5. Pray for others, then restPray for one or two people by name. Then end with a short prayer for peace and turn out the light.

Some nights this takes two minutes, some nights fifteen. Both count. Our guide to building a daily prayer habit has more ideas for making it stick.

Night prayers from the Bible

You do not have to find your own words. The Psalms give you evening prayers you can read slowly, as they are. Our guide to praying the Psalms shows how. Good ones to start with:

Many families also pray the Lord’s Prayer together before bed. It is short, children learn it quickly, and it covers praise, daily needs, forgiveness and protection.

For young children, the traditional rhyme from the 18th-century New England Primer is still a good start:

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep.

The New England Primer (18th century)

When you cannot sleep

Lying awake is a hard time to pray, because the mind tends to run toward worry. A few things help:

“It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.”

Psalm 127:2 (KJV)

If sleeplessness or anxiety goes on for weeks, talk to a doctor as well as to God. Prayer and good care work together.

A phone set aside at night makes the first minutes of the morning easier too.

If your evenings disappear into scrolling, Prayer Lock in the PrayerForYou app keeps the apps you choose locked until you have prayed, so the last word of the day can be a prayer.

Common questions

What is a good short prayer before bed?

Keep it simple: thank God for the day, give Him your worries and ask for rest. For example: “Lord, thank You for today. I give You what I could not finish and the people I love. Give me peace and good sleep. Amen.”

Is it wrong to fall asleep while praying?

No. Falling asleep while talking to God is not a failure. If it happens every night and you want more time with Him, try praying a little earlier, sitting up, or praying out loud.

What is the difference between night prayer and evening prayer?

Evening prayer is often prayed at sunset or after the evening meal. Night prayer, sometimes called Compline in church tradition, is the last prayer before sleep. At home you can treat them as one short time with God at the end of the day.

Which psalm is good to pray at night?

Psalm 4, Psalm 91, Psalm 121 and Psalm 134 are traditional night psalms. Psalm 4:8 is one of the best-known bedtime verses: “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep.”
