What does “I’m praying for you” mean?
It means you are bringing that person, and what they are carrying, before God by name. Christians call this intercession, and the early church did it constantly. Paul wrote to the believers in Colossae that he and his friends “do not cease to pray for you.”
“For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.”
Colossians 1:9 (KJV)
Saying it is easy. The prayers below help you actually do it. For the bigger picture, read our guide to intercessory prayer.

Send: “I’ve been praying for clarity for you. Here if you want to talk it through.”
A blessing you can pray over anyone
When you don’t know what someone needs, pray the blessing God gave Aaron to speak over His people. Put their name in front of it.
The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
How to keep praying for someone after today
The hardest part isn’t the first prayer. It’s the second, and the tenth. Three habits help:
- Write their name down where you pray, with the date you started.
- Tie it to something you already do, like your morning coffee or the prayer of the day.
- Ask how it is going a week later. Your follow-up shows the prayer was real.
Common questions
Is it okay to say “I’m praying for you” to someone who isn’t religious?
Usually, if you say it gently and mean it. “I’m thinking of you and praying for you” is kinder than a sermon. If someone would rather you didn’t, respect that and keep praying quietly.
What can I say instead of “I’m praying for you”?
Be specific: “I prayed for your surgery this morning” or “I’m asking God to give you rest this week.” A specific line tells them you actually did it.
Does praying for someone else make a difference?
Scripture asks us to do it: “pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16). And the person you pray for usually feels less alone the moment you tell them.
